Half Moon Bay Hike

The weekend before last we finally got a brief break from the rain, so we decided to head out of the city to spend the day in nature. We went hiking at Purisima Creek Redwoods Preserve in Half Moon Bay. It was our first time here and we really enjoyed it!

We got a fairly early start as we had read that it’s popular and can therefore get parked up on the weekends. We arrived about 10:30 and grabbed one of the last parking spots on the side of the road. Although the parking lot was full, the park itself didn’t feel too crowded. I do understand the popularity of it as it is a really beautiful place to hike. If you are interested in coming, I would recommend coming either early in the morning or later in the afternoon. By the time we finished our hike in the afternoon, there were quite a few others leaving at the same time and the parking lot had significantly cleared out.

The highlight for me was definitely all of the banana slugs that we saw – we counted over 50! I think the most I’d previously ever seen in one day was maybe two or three… They were literally everywhere! We had so much fun playing “Where’s Waldo” and pointing them out left and right as we hiked along.

We packed a picnic lunch to enjoy during our hike; however, one of our favorite lunch spots in the area is Sam’s Chowder House. It’s a great casual spot for some seafood and a glass of wine right on the water. It does get crowded so there might be a bit of a wait. If you do have some time to kill, take a walk along the beach.
