Irish Soda Bread Recipe

Irish Soda Bread Recipe 1Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Coming at you today with another recipe post! This one is in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, and is extra special to me as it is a recipe passed down from my grandpa. My grandpa’s family was from Ireland and he perfected their delicious soda bread recipe over the years. If you’ve never tried soda bread before, you’re in for a treat. It’s a hearty bread filled with caraway seeds and raisins and is highly addictive! We make a couple batches every St. Patrick’s Day and it never lasts more than a few days – it’s that good!

4c flour

1/4c sugar

1 tsp salt

1 tsp baking powder

3-4 heaping tbsp caraway seeds

1/4c margarine

1c raisins

1 1/3c buttermilk

1 egg

1 tsp baking soda

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and caraway seeds.
  3. To the mixture, cut in the margarine. Give it another good mix, then add in the raisins and stir to combine.
  4. In another bowl, mix together the buttermilk, egg, and baking soda until thoroughly combined.
  5. Add the liquid mixture to the dry mixture and mix until it comes together.
  6. Place the loaf on a floured surface and knead for 2 minutes. Shape into a circular form and place on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
  7. Dust the top of the loaf with flour and cut a cross about 1/4 inch deep.
  8. Bake for about 1 hr or until a toothpick comes out dry and the loaf starts to turn golden brown.

Note: I personally love it slightly toasted with some butter smeared on top! Yum!
